Every festival has food, but few have a food program as curated and ambitious as Way Out West. Over the years, the Gothenburg festival has become a destination not only for music lovers, but also for food enthusiasts who plan their visit around everything from acclaimed restaurants to hyped food trucks. This year’s food program continues that tradition, while putting an even stronger emphasis on local flavours and collaborations.
This year’s food lineup brings together award-winning chefs, beloved local institutions, future-facing startups and some of Sweden’s most popular food trucks. Whether you arrive craving ramen, tacos, pizza, Indian street food or simply something you didn’t know existed before today, there will be plenty to discover across the festival grounds.
At Gläntan, just by the festival entrance, visitors can enjoy Ida Bauhn’s (Chef of the Year) vegetarian take on Dan Dan noodles, made with locally produced Swedish noodles. Former winner of Sweden’s Chef of the Year, Jessie Sommarström, returns to serve the Noble Prize porridge ”Kulturgröten” from the Nobel banquet menu.
The area will also host Local Chef’s Corner, where some of Gothenburg’s most exciting restaurants and culinary voices gather. Among them is Dupont, the highly anticipated restaurant set to open in central Gothenburg, offering festivalgoers an early taste of what’s to come. Returning favourites Basso and Mackbaren are also back, while Rädda Svenska Grönsaker gives new life to ingredients that would otherwise have gone to waste.
At Lilla Dammen, Broth Boy returns with his now legendary Browned Butter Spicy Miso ramen. Also joining the area is a new collaboration between Suggan and Gaffelkonst, created especially for this year’s festival.
Between the festival’s two main stages, Azalea and Flamingo, restaurant Bikt opens an à la carte experience inspired by both Southern European and Nordic cuisine. Nearby, Gujju expands into a new dedicated food area celebrating the richness and diversity of Indian cooking.
Hermanos TacoKiosk also returns to the festival, this year taking over its own area at Höjden and serving Mexican flavours throughout the weekend. Meanwhile, at Smålandsstugan also located at Höjden, you’ll find an area by Wet City, featuring Way Out West’s very own vodka as well as local spirits, Polish vegan pierogi, and a beer specially brewed for the festival.
Last year’s Startup Kitchen also returns in a new format. Bringing together some of Sweden’s most exciting independent plant-based producers under one roof, the initiative explores what the future of sustainable food might taste like.
As always, Way Out West’s food truck lineup offers something for every appetite. This year’s selection includes Byfolkets Smålandsrullar, HK’s Lila, Mackverket, Falafelkungen, Babas, Bastard Burgers, Mandelmannen, Gapa Deli, Boho Bar and Langosverket.
