The Magnolia
Slottsskogen Saturday August 15th
The Magnolia deserve their own chapter in Swedish music history for having fostered not one, but two of the country’s most singular voices: Albin Lee Meldau and Arvid Nero. But The Magnolia were always more than a launching pad. The Gothenburg-based collective remains one of the few Swedish bands to truly capture the emotional depth and soulful sensitivity heard in classic Stax and Motown recordings from the 60s and 70s. And with intuitive musicianship, rich arrangements and the magnetic interplay between Meldau and Nero, their music has always felt equally shaped by Gothenburg rain as by Memphis heat. After releasing their debut album “First Time” in 2015, The Magnolia disappeared for nearly a decade. Now, the band has finally decided to return with a new album, this time alongside songwriter and producer Benjamin George Cramer, better known as Old Sea Brigade, who also joins the group as guitarist. The first single “Muscle In” suggests the comeback was worth the wait: lush gospel harmonies, aching soul songwriting and a warm, timeless pulse that feels simultaneously classic and strangely immediate. This summer, Way Out West gets to witness that return firsthand.
