Arthur Verocai
Slottsskogen Thursday August 13th
Greatness and recognition don’t always coincide. Few stories illustrate that better than Arthur Verocai’s self-titled 1972 album. A record that, in hindsight, feels nothing short of visionary. At the time, it was a commercial disappointment. Yet its daring fusion of lush orchestration, the emerging pulse of funk, and the kaleidoscopic spirit of Tropicália created something entirely its own: cinematic, rhythmically adventurous, harmonically rich. It should have marked the beginning of something larger, but when the album failed to sell, Verocai turned toward work in advertising and arrangement to sustain himself. For decades, the record lingered in obscurity, until the early 2000s, when crate-diggers, DJs and musicians began to rediscover it. A devoted cult following emerged, particularly among hip-hop producers and rare-groove aficionados, who recognized in its sweeping strings and inventive grooves something timeless. Verocai returned to recording with renewed purpose, beginning with the exquisite “Saudade Demais” in 2002. He continued to refine his language on “No Voo do Urubu” (2016), a darker, more expansive work that deepened his dialogue between Brazilian tradition and cosmic jazz-funk textures. Today, Arthur Verocai stands as proof that bold musical vision never dies. This summer, Arthur Verocai takes the stage at Way Out West.
Arthur Verocai will perform in Slottsskogen on Thursday August 13th
