This week the spotlight shines on Kokoroko, who will perform on Stay Out West.
This eight-piece collective is fronted by trumpet player Sheila Maurice-Grey. Their way of blending soulful jazz sounds with afrobeat rhythms is quite unique and very moving.
They experienced something of a breakthrough with their beautiful tune Abusey Junction on last year’s We Out Here, a compilation showcasing the young, alternative and multi-cultural jazz scene in London. We Out Here was released by the Brownswood label, who recently also put out Kokoroko’s debut EP, and Shabaka Hutchings from much praised horns-and-drums quartet Sons of Kemet served as the project’s musical director.
Abusey Junction now has more than 6 million streams on Spotify, which is impressive for a new act in this genre.
