This should not work. To so shamelessly pick the pockets of the giants of rock and on top of that wrap it in a manner that in no way suggests that this is contemporary. That this is in fact music made today, by two brothers from a small town on Long Island called Hicksville. But against all odds the The Lemon Twigs [US] manages to pull it off. The reasons are many. First and foremost, their love for The Kinks, Beatles, The Beach Boys, Queen, The Who and Todd Rundgren is true and pure. Thus, hearing them channeled through the wide-eyed enthusiasm and notable talent of The Lemon Twigs is almost like hearing them for the first time. The sincerity is also why it never tilts to pastiche – possibly naïve, but never boring. Secondly, they have amazing hair, envision Beatles post break-up. Their sure instinct regarding aesthetics saturates every detail and the two brothers are filled to the brim with star dust.
The Lemon Twigs released their critically acclaimed debut album Do Hollywood in 2016. Since then, they released the EP Brothers of Destruction in 2017 and earlier this year we got the new, Rolling Stones-inspired single Foolin’ Around/ Tailor Made. When Lemon Twigs take their rock-n-roll circus to the stage it’s just as magical as one could imagine. The brothers Michael and Brian D’Addario takes turn singing. Brian evokes Pet Sounds and Michael seems to be possessed by Keith Moons spirit. With infallible musicality and an overdose of rock history, the Lemon Twigs will send Way Out West back to 1972.
