There is an immediate urgency in the music of modern jazz supergroup Sons Of Kemet. Prolific band leader, British saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, the two percussionists Edward Wakili-Hick and Tom Kinner and the tuba player Theon Cross targets both the mind and the body with their political blend of free jazz, African rhythms, Caribbean dub, and Middle Eastern timbres. It’s melodic, intricate, raw, and explosive – admired by both jazz enthusiast and others. Their celebrated album ‘Your Queen Is A Reptile’ (2018) was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize and earlier this year, Sons Of Kemet released the equally praised ‘Black To The Future’ where the thematic is focused on the summer of 2020 with the tragic death of George Floyd and the following Black Lives Matter protests.
