Often categorized as a jazz musician, even though Kamaal Williams begs to differ: ”We’ve grown up on grime, garage, broken beat, drum’n’bass and house,” he told Red Bull in an interview when describing the young and vibrant jazz scene in London. “There’s too many other new elements in there to just say it’s jazz. I just call it music from London, because that’s what it is, undoubtedly.” In August he’ll bring London to Stay Out West.
Kamaal Williams is a musical project led by South London pianist and DJ Henry Wu, who made himself a name as part of the duo Yussef Kamaal – their album Black Focus, from 2016, is considered to be a landmark for British jazz. In 2018 Kamaal Williams released The Return, an album that NPR described “Like a dub full-length, it’s mostly concerned with the interplay of rhythm, pattern and sonic fabric.” Last year he was selected to mix DJ-Kicks 70th instalment.
Kamaal Williams will play at Stay Out West on Thursday August 13.
