Music can be a safe haven. Being one of the few kids of mixed-race in the small Danish town Ribe, MTV was the only place Erika de Casier saw other Black people. That is the reason that her appropriately named album ‘Sensational’ (2021) focuses on the R&B of that same era. But although the echoes of Brandy, Destiny’s Child, Erykah Badu and TLC can be heard in the synthesized acoustic guitars, the shakers and the accented rimshots, de Casier is anything but a vintage act. With her hushed, secretive vocals and her witty lyrics about failed relationships, ‘Sensational’ feels unquestionably contemporary. This summer Erika de Casier is bringing her silky-smooth R&B to Way Out West!
